A Rush to Rescue Atomic-Bomb Survivors – Kazan Tanino Haiku Collection (excerpt 2) 原子爆弾救助行(抜粋2)ー谷野夏山俳句集 (Translation: Hiroyuki Murakami; Proofreading: Patricia J. Machmiller)

In honor of Yukuharu’s senior poet Kazan Tanino, here are 6 more haiku chosen from the story of rescue in Hiroshima.

thunderclouds

the accumulated soul of

one hundred thousand people

I offer

ice chips to a girl

with burned flesh

the amber barrette

of a burned-out girl

still hot

what she mumbles

to the maggot-infested infant

could be a lullaby

water water water

a man and his flies

beg for water

sobbing at the moon

he holds on

to his dead wife
